Risks Associated with Midges

Midges that bite are known as Ceratopogonidae and will feed on the blood of animals and humans. These bites have been known to pass on certain diseases in particular with animals such as Blue Tongue. Midges that do not bite are still seen as a pest although carry fewer diseases and causing less damage.

Midges, like Mosquitos, are attracted to bright colours and water, especially sewers. To avoid the risk of bites you must be particularly careful during the spring and summer while near water, and when wearing bright coloured clothing. By reducing the amount of exposed skin will help deter these insects from you. If you are bitten, then some methods to deal with the bites include antihistamines and cold compresses.

Midge Control Methods

Depending on the type of midges and the severity of the issue, professional pest control for a midge infestation will vary. Methods will usually involve chemical based products as well as prevention methods to deter them from your home or business. Proofing against midges is an important part of midge control as they tend to not stray far (within 100 meters) from where they live.
